I’m Yuliya, a senior majoring in Course 17 Political Science Course 24-1 Philosophy, with a minor in Course 9 Brain and Cognitive Sciences. I was born in Donetsk, Ukraine, and moved to Central Ohio during my freshman year of high school. I currently live on the First East floor of East Campus. What are you currently excited about? After this, Im heading to  9.46 Neuroscience of Morality. It’s a very “MIT” class, counting for both my Philosophy and Neuroscience requirements. And it’s been pretty amazing so far. This week, we are talking about empathy and compassion, and how they are expressed differently in the brain. Although the science on this is very new (the papers we read are from the past 1-7 years), some experiments have shown that empathizing with others’ pain actually activates our own brains’ pain regions! I’m also excited about the earrings I’m wearing. Last week, I went to the MIT Museum specifically to buy nerdy earrings (I recently pierced more holes in my ears just to create nerdy ear scenes”). I’m currently wearing a “pi,” a “square root,” and a chemical structure for the scent of jasmine in my left ear. The jasmine structure earrings are also scented like jasmine! Lastly, I’m excited about a bunch of things outside of class. My senior year slogan is “do all the things you might regret not doing later.” And that has been a lot of fun. What is on your shirt?   My shirt is from MIT’s annual production of The Vagina Monologues, which has happened for the past 15 years. The group that puts on VagMo is The F-Word, and I’m the president this year. We’re trying to expand the group to highlight more diverse underrepresented students’ voices, since VagMo is a bit outdated. This year, we want to talk and learn about topics like consent, gender, sexuality, communication, religion etc. 2017 Not Just For Vaginas Anymore! (though, to be fair, The F-Word never was) How did you choose your living community? East Campus is where I felt most comfortable, and the same goes for my floor, First East. Every year for Freshman Residence Exploration (REX), EC builds a fully-operational wooden roller coaster and fort, and freshmen get to help out. Its a pretty cool way to attract new residents. EC has an overarching dorm culture, but each floor has a sub-culture as well. Our hall has cats. And we do lots of cool things together. One IAP (January Independent Activities Period), we got together and built an LED disco dance floor. Later, we had a “Mitochondria Powerhouse of the Cell”-themed party which featured animated mitochondria sliding across the DDF. Our hall also goes out for food and watches TV together (e.g. Netflix shows, Rick and Morty, John Oliver, and GoT). The 1e GRT (Graduate Resident Tutor) makes us waffles with fun toppings every Monday. How do you make friends? What is your community at MIT? My hall is where most of my connections are. Regardless of what time it is, I can probably find someone to talk to. Outside of hall, student groups are a really great way to meet people with similar interests. That’s the case for other students as well. Because of MIT’s wonderful choose-your-own-residence plan, people find their local families and support systems. Plus ~60% of MIT men and ~40% of MIT women are affiliated with fraternities/sororities, and many others are in independent living groups. What surprised you the most about MIT?   How quickly it felt like home! And I’m definitely not unique in that perception. If you look at freshman Admissions bloggers’ first posts, they always contain some variation of the “MIT is home” statement. What kinds of students would not enjoy MIT?   People who are not passionate about STEM. Although you don’t have to be a STEM major (I’m not), MIT still requires a lot of challenging technical courses, such as GIRs (General Institute Requirements) and REST  (Restricted Electives in Science at Technology) classes. And HASS (Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences) classes often get a technical spin as well, so you’re going to be really sad if you don’t like STEM. Also, you probably shouldn’t choose to come to MIT solely because you want to make a lot of money. What are MIT Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences programs like?   HASS classes at MIT are challenging and amazing. We have some of the best programs in the U.S. (Economics is #1, Political Science is #9), and many faculty members are top experts in their field (Junot Díaz in 21W Writing won a Pulitzer, for example). I usually explain that MIT Political Science is “basically statistics” and MIT Philosophy is “basically logic.” Last spring in my Political Science Laboratory, we learned statistical methods, programming in a new language, and social science research specifics. My Womens and Gender Studies  course that semester was on epidemiology and medical research. I wanted to be a math major originally, and I haven’t moved too far from that. I just applied mathematics to answer fascinating questions about the world. And still got to explore many other fields. As a HASS major, you won’t miss out on job or other opportunities (even though it might feel like that during Career Fair). What is the biggest change/growth you experienced at MIT?   Starting with the tangible changes: my hair. It has been bleached, rainbow, red, purple and red colors, and is currently blue-black (with a partial side shave). These changes seem superficial, but they really represent my personal growth. At MIT, through my dorm community, VagMo, and other extracurriculars and UROPs, I got to explore and shape my identity, both in major and minor ways. Now I know what I really want to do with my life. And, by the way, a hairdo like this does not preclude you from getting a job at places like Veterans Affairs or Harvard Med School! What kinds of support services does MIT provide?   MIT offers  a lot of resources. The number of support options has been increasing since my freshman year, to the point that it gets confusing to decide where to go. This is why it’s great to live in dorms with upperclassmen, who can tell you which service, or even provider from the service, is best. We have live-in GRTs (Graduate Resident Tutors) in dorms, as well as Heads of House and Assistant Heads of House. Popular non-residential offices are S^3  (Student Support Services), good for academic arrangements and support, and MIT Mental Health, which is free  and confidential. Do students themselves reach out to support peers? Yes! The number of support services led by students has also been increasing. People here want to support peers. I’ve reached out to freshmen on hall informally, but also through  Peer Ears  sophomore year, which is a student group loosely affiliated with MIT Mental Health. Peer Ears are available to talk or refer to MIT services during a difficult period. I’m now in PLEASURE @ MIT, which stands for Peers Leading Education about Sexuality and Speaking Up for Relationship Empowerment, and is a student-led effort to promote healthy relationships and reduce sexual violence at MIT (note that the acronym is kind of misleading, because our focus is on relationships and identity).  MedLinks are another great residential peer resource. They can provide medical assistance, and, if you’re mildly sick, give you drugs. Lean On Me, started by a group of 2018s, provides anonymous peer support via text. All of these opportunities are unpaid, but students are excited to participate and willing to go through multiple days of training during the semester. There’s actually some competition for the positions, though MIT has lower barriers to entry than in other schools. What is your relationship with the alumni community like? Alumni are usually very happy to talk to current students! As an undergrad, you get access to the Infinite Connection portal, where you can browse through the alumni list and contact former students about potential jobs or just to chat. Over IAP (Independent Activities Period), theres an  Externship Program  for students to work in alumni’s workplaces. This year, there are 260 externship opportunities to choose from. Informally, dorms and halls host their own events for alums. For example, East Campus has organized Old East Campus Day. What would you change about MIT? More HASS majors! ~40% of MIT undergrads are in Course 6 Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and another large portion is in Course 2 Mechanical Engineering. I was the only sophomore in Political Science, and we now only have six seniors. Philosophy is also super tiny (six people in all four years, last time I checked). This is great on one hand, as I get access to unique  opportunities, but it also gets lonely. What kinds of career services exist?   In my experience, upperclassmen are the best resource for career advice and inspiration, as well insider tips. Even by just observing them, you can learn a lot about the process. MIT also has an office of Global Education Career Development (GECD), which can help you edit your resumes and cover letters. The biggest career events are the Fall and Spring Career Fairs. 400+ companies participate (unfortunately, the majority of them are Course 6-related). What do you do outside of class? I mentioned The F-Word and PLEASURE @ MIT, which are two wonderful communities for personal growth and learning (and facilitation and public speaking skills are a must in the workplace!). I’m also continuing my UROP in Veterans Affairs and blogging. Since it’s my senior year, I’m applying to jobs, which is a major extracurricular on its own. The jobs process involves attending a lot of events and networking, preparing for specialized interviews, and writing cover letters and emails. Fortunately, I found fellow “job-seekers” to share information and a calendar. I’m also applying for graduate school. To be more precise, we run few courses that focus solely on grammar and punctuation even though more people come to us asking for training in just this area than in any other. And why? Are we phasing the subjects out? Do we not think them important? Has everyone, including us, given up caring? Goodness, no. The fact that our clients often dont end up taking a grammar and punctuation course is not because were keeping it all for ourselves. Rather, its that when they describe their needs in more detail, it often turns out that theyre looking for something broader than just grammar and punctuation. Grammar can be a red herring Most people have a clear idea of what punctuation is, but grammars a little tougher to define. Putting it broadly, grammar is the structure of language: things such as different word classes (verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc) and how words relate to each other or change to show different inflections (such as number, tense and case). However, thanks to the promulgation of so-called rules such as dont start a sentence with a conjunction or dont split infinitives, grammar can seem like a narrow set of procedures that you have to master in order to write well. Peevish articles that get passed around online only add to the misapprehensions (many have cited this one, to which writer and editor Stan Carey has written this comprehensive reply). Such articles tend to further muddy already murky waters by confusing personal preferences or long-standing superstitions (which are usually just extremely old personal preferences) with genuine guidance on rules that will give your writing real clarity. For example, contrast the rule about misplaced modifiers, where the writer inadvertently modifies the wrong part of the sentence, with the superstition that its wrong to put prepositions at the end of a sentence. It does make sense to avoid misplaced modifiers, such as: Showing strong growth, the chief executive presented an impressive set of results. These can bewilder your reader or undermine your writing (not to mention anger chief executives who dont care to have attention drawn to their waistlines). Ending on a preposition, however, is no barrier to clarity. When people approach us with grammar and punctuation on their minds, it may be that theyve noticed errant apostrophes in their teams work, that the writing isnt following a logical structure, or simply that theyre not getting the results they want. Improving writing skills can make a great difference, but theres more to it than blindly following prescriptive mandates. Spigot is one of several English words in which the spelling -ot is pronounced [É™t] at the end of the word. spigot [spÄ ­gÉ™t] faucet, like the one your tap water comes out of, or the one you attach your garden hose to. It also refers to the projection on a cask or box of wine that the liquid comes through. bigot (bÄ ­gÉ™t) originally a religious fanatic, but now any person characterized by obstinate, intolerant, or strongly partisan beliefs (OED). In cruising the web I came across the expression bigot spigot. Apparently the term has been coined to describe purveyors of intolerant partisan opinion. faggot, fagot [fÄÆ'gÉ™t] both spellings are seen, but the first is more common. The word is used with various meanings. The original meaning is a bundle of sticks. Now it is also used to refer to a bundle of herbs. The word became associated with religious heretics because bundles of sticks were used to burn them at the stake. To fry a faggot was to burn a heretic. Having continued high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) increases a persons risk of many serious illnesses, for example; cardiovascular disease, stroke, embolism, aneurysm and kidney disease, to name a few. Approximately one in five people in the UK suffer from hypertension. Gill. S, Kristensen. SD. (08/02/2011). However many of these aren’t aware, as there are not always obvious symptoms. For this reason it is sometimes known as the silent killer. NHS Choices. (04/07/2014). In some instances, with continued levels of very high blood pressure, individuals may display persistent headaches, blurred or double vision, nosebleeds and shortness of breath. The only way to know if a person has a problem with their blood pressure is to get it measured. The NHS recommend that every adult should have their blood pressure checked every 5 years. NHS Choices. (04/07/2014). The chart opposite shows the different levels of blood pressure and at what point they are considered low, normal and high. This chart is suitable for adults of any age as, although a persons blood pressure might change with age, the levels at which the pressure is considered high, normal or low do not. Blood Pressure Association . (2008). When taking a person’s blood pressure there are two readings. The top number is the systolic blood pressure. This is the highest pressure when the heart beats and pushes blood around the body. The bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure. This is the lowest pressure when the heart is relaxed between beats. Low blood pressure is anything less than 90/60. Ideal blood pressure is between 90/60 and 120/80. Readings up to 140/90 mean that the blood pressure is a little high and should be reduced slightly but anything over 140/90 is an indication of high blood pressure. Only one of either the systolic or diastolic numbers has to be higher than it should be to indicate that a person has high blood pressure . Blood Pressure Association . (2008). If blood pressure is 120 diastolic or below the risk of cardiovascular disease as a result of blood pressure is minimal but as it rises up to 140 diastolic the risk doubles and then by 160 over it doubles again. For every 20mm diastolic i ncrease the risk of death from cardiovascular disease doubles. Blood Pressure Association. (2008). Figures published by Public Health England in November 2014 showed that diseases caused by continued high blood pressure cost the NHS over  £2bn every year and monitoring accounts for 12% of all GP visits.  £850 million could be saved over a period of 10 years if overall blood pressure was reduced. In addition, over the same period of time, if 15% more people were diagnosed, a further  £120 million could be saved. Finally, if another 15% currently being treated controlled their blood pressure more effectively, another  £120 million could be saved. Public Health England. (2014). However, the act of measuring blood pressure is problematic. The whole process of going to visit a G.P to have your blood pressure monitored can in itself increase blood pressure. This is commonly known as the white coat effect; where a blood pressure reading is higher when taken in a medical setting than when it’s taken at home. This may be because patients are more nervous in such settings. It is reported that such an increase may occur in as many as 25% of those diagnosed with high blood pressure. This can lead to improper diagnosis of high blood pressure. NHS Choices. (24/08/2011). NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) reports that this effect is more common in pregnancy and with increasing age. McManus. R et al (2011). Thus other methods of monitoring are being considered more widely. One of these methods is ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM). This is where blood pressure is measured for up to 24 hours. A small digital blood pressure monitor is se cured around a patients waist and connected to a cuff at the top of their arm. It is small enough not to affect daily life and can even be used when asleep. It measures the blood pressure at regular intervals over 24 hours, so a doctor is able to get a clear idea of how a patient’s blood pressure changes throughout the day. It avoids the problem of misleading spikes in blood pressure because a patient is feeling anxious about being tested. Pickering found that 21% of 292 patients with borderline high blood pressure actually had normal daytime readings. These patients were defined as having white coat hypertension, and they were more likely to be female, younger and to weigh less. Pickering. TG et al (1988). Staessen undertook a similar study and found that more patients measured by ABPM stopped treatment than those measured in a medical setting. Staessen. JA et al (1997). Therefore the benefits to large portions of society who might be able to stop taking drugs as a result of mis-diagnosis could be quite substantial. ABPM is, however, expensive. In 2011 NICE released the findings of a study that found that although it was the most accurate method of diagnosing hypertension, it was also the most expensive. However, the savings made as a result of reduced cost of drugs and GP visits meant that it was still the most cost effective means of measuring and confirming diagnosis. McManus. R et al (2011). Staessen also found that drug intervention could be reduced and that blood pressure and overall general health was improved as a result of treatment based on ABPM reading. Staessen. JA et al (1997). Therefore the social and economic benefits of ABPM would appear to be wholly worth the cost. However, Law, Wald and Morris Law. M, Wald. N, Morris. J. (2003). suggest there are problems with restricting the measurement of blood pressure purely to those with high blood pressure. They argue that although blood pressure is an important cause of stroke and heart disease it is not a good screening test to distinguish who will or will not develop them. They claim that most strokes and coronary heart disease occurs in people who do not have high blood pressure (only 10% of people with the highest blood pressure experience less than one third of all strokes and one fifth of all coronary heart disease events) and that older people with average blood pressure have a substantially greater risk than younger people with high blood pressure.They suggest that the term hypertension intimates that blood pressure is a disease in itself, rather than an indication of more serious problems and that monitoring with a view to reducing high blood pressure ignores those whose blood pressure might be relatively normal or borderline but whom for other reasons may develop stroke or heart disease. They found that lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke whatever the starting blood pressure. They suggest that the main method of screening should be to identify all those with a history of stroke or heart attack. They further suggest that there is little point in measuring blood pressure after a first event as subsequent deaths account for about half of all deaths from stroke and heart disease. Surprisingly, Law, Wald and Morris suggest that changes in diet and lifestyle have only a limited effect in reducing average blood pressure, although they do acknowledge that a major reduction in the salt content of manufactured foods by the food industry would have an impact. They argue that blood pressure lowering drugs are the only way to ensure substantial reductions in blood pressure. As such they suggest that blood pressure reducing drugs should be given to all those identified as susceptible to heart disease or stroke, including those over a certain age, regardless of the level of their blood pressure. The impartiality of Law, Wald and Morris findings are questionable as they see medication as the only way forward. It is not clear if their research is funded by a pharmaceutical company and care would need to be taken when relying upon their findings. They give no credence to the social benefits of life style changes, for example general well being from a reduced diet or alcohol intake, as well as the benefits brought about from the socialising aspect of exercise. Their recommendations also take no account of the reluctance of otherwise healthy individuals to a lifetime of drug taking. As highlighted by Honigsbaum, Honigsbaum. M.. (2012). who, at the age of 47, living a healthy life style, rejected the notion of having to take pills for the rest of his life. Honigsbaum is an example of those in Law’s study, whose life style did not suggest a problem with high blood pressure but whom had a genetic pre disposition to the condition. In conclusion, it would appear that there is consensus of agreement that high blood pressure is a major world health problem and that monitoring is essential. However, there is still a lot to be done in terms of education about lifestyle and adoption of values that underpin this, for example encouragement of healthier lifestyles and for the food industry to take take responsibility for a reduction in salt in manufactured foods. There is further a growing body of agreement that ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is the most effective in terms of diagnosis and as such the higher costs are justified. In addition, questions remain regarding how to identify those with pre existing or inherent predisposition to cardiovascular disease who may not have high blood pressure. References Gill. Personality Theory of Sigmund Freud Essay

According to Freud, mankind has only two drives that determine all thoughts, emotions, and desires- the need for sex and aggression. Sex is the equivalent of life- after all it is how we procreate the species and continue our lineage. Aggression often leads to its equivalent – death- which is also a control measure for procreating the species as it allows us to remove an adversary that may prevent procreation. Freud proposed that there are three levels to our personalities- the Id , the Ego, and the Superego. At birth, we are born with the Id, which he described as being the part of the personality that demands our basic needs. It is important because it drives our instinct to obtain our basic needs and keep ourselves alive. It looks only for satisfaction of a hunger, whether it is for food, comfort or any other pleasurable sensation. As a child interacts in his first three years of life, the Ego begins to form. The Ego begins to realize there are others that have needs and that interaction in the world means thinking of this and responding accordingly. Around five, the formation of the Superego starts as the child becomes trained in the moral and ethical ideas of his caregivers- it is often compared to the conscience. Throughout the rest of our life the Ego serves as the mediator between the Superego and the Id, keeping us from becoming either totally self-centered and demanding or rigid and unbending in our interactions with others. In the fights with the Id and Superego, the Ego develops various defense mechanisms to help keep the balance. These defense mechanisms help the ego sate the id’s impulsiveness without offending the Superego’s moral position- all the while keeping reality in check. Some of these defenses include denial, intellectualization, regression and sublimation. Perhaps the most debated of Freud’s writings is his theory of psychosexual development and it’s five stages. The first stage, which stretches from birth to 18 months, is the oral stage where the baby is focused on the pleasures associated with sucking. From 18 months to age three, the child is in the anal stage, where pleasure is derived from retaining and releasing. The phallic stage covers age’s three to six, in which the pleasure zone switches to the genitals. This is the stage in which the Oedipal complex comes into play. The latency stage stretches from age six to puberty during which pleasures are repressed in order for learning to take place. From puberty to death, we are in the genital stage in which our pleasure derives from the genitals. While many of his theories are not as popular today, Freud laid the groundwork for understanding the human mind.
